Mars on December 5, 2022 - Near Opposition

Imaged Mars on the night of December 5, 2022 under good seeing and above average transparency. Mars was at near its brightest for this apparition during this imaging session with closest approach to Earth taking place on December 1st and opposition on December 8th. Mars' disc had a diameter of 17.1" and a visual magnitude of -1.9 at this teim. In the northern hemisphere, the northern polar hood continues to show prominently with some surface features visible through the clouds in this image. To the west of the meridian, Syrtis Major is prominent in the north and Hellas Basis in the south. To the east of the meridian, Mare Cimmerium is prominently seen.

Imaged with a C8 Evo, ZWO ADC, Baader UV-IR Cut filter, and ZWO ASI224MC. Imaging train was configured to give me ~F/20. Image capture using Firecapture with gain set at 300 and an exposure of 3 ms. Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 10% of ~25000 frames captured over 180 seconds). Color balancing and Wavelet sharpening in Registax6. De-rotated and combined 3 sub images in WinJupos.
